Save Money Continuously With Energy Efficient Products

Energy efficient products can help you to save a considerable amount of money in the long term, as well as giving you the satisfaction that you are doing your bit for the environment. In many cases, it will not be worth your while to throw away a working model just so you can buy a new one, but in some cases the savings can be large enough to warrant this. In any case, you will benefit from knowing where to invest your money when the time for a replacement comes.

Knowing exactly which energy efficiency products to buy can be a bewildering minefield, but recent legislation has improved the situation by introducing Energy Star labeling. This gives you a greater idea of fuel consumption generated by normal use. The labeling also extends to building materials which are the most critical factor in how much energy the typical household uses. If the walls are insulated, and the windows replaced with Low-E glazing, you will be getting the greatest possible benefit from the heat you generate and saving money regularly. Make sure that your roof is properly insulated as well, as heat rises and this is a critical defense against excessive heat loss.

The area where the majority of households can derive the greatest benefit from energy efficient products is in the heating or cooling system which regulates the temperature. Unless you live in an exceptionally mild temperate zone, you will need to use heating or cooling appliances to regulate the temperature for much of the year. These can be expensive to run, but the appliances manufactured in recent years are far more energy efficient. You will generate the same amount of heat for a reduced consumption of power, leading to continuing savings.

Any use of electrical appliances is going to take up power and cost you money, so it pays to buy the most highly rated you can find for low energy use. Of course, there is a limit to this, and you cannot be expected to pay a lot more initially for a product which is only going to give you limited savings over time. The more you use an appliance, the more likely it is that an energy efficient purchase will be justified. A case in point is the refrigerator, which is often constantly switched on and using power. Refrigerator technology is constantly improving, both to cut down CFC emissions and to save energy.

If you own your own vehicle, you will find that this is one of your greatest consumers of energy. You can always save money by switching to a model which uses less gasoline, but there are ways to of even further. Electric vehicles are already on the market, although their limited range means they are only really suitable for use in a localized area. Usually, this is a city which offers concessions and places to charge the vehicle. You can also buy hybrid vehicles which run on electrical power and gasoline. These are definitely more economical to run than gas only models, but they are expensive to buy.

Buying energy efficient products can certainly be a way to save money over the life of the product, and many products are coming down in price to be more competitive. A case in point is the fluorescent light bulb, which uses a fifth of the power of the equivalent incandescent bulb. These bulbs were too expensive and unreliable when they first appeared, but now the established names in lighting are producing fluorescent bulbs at competitive prices. The manufacture of the bulbs has also greatly improved, and they are now among the most reliable energy efficient products.

Energy efficient light bulbs can play a significant part in helping you to save money, while preserving energy resources and the environment at the same time. They can do this without you needing to suffer any reduction in the amount of light which is available in your rooms, as the compact fluorescent bulb will give off the same amount of light as an equivalent incandescent bulb using five times as much power. Using these bulbs also saves you time, as you will need to change them far less often.

So, the common misconception that energy efficient lights must leave your room more dimly lit is completely false. Why, then, do so many people still use the traditional incandescent bulbs which have no conceivable advantage? The first and most obvious answer is force of habit, as thousands of people have been buying and using incandescent bulbs since their youth, and saw their parents doing the same. Even though there has been a great amount of publicity concerning all aspects of energy preservation, it has obviously not been enough to convince these people to change. More will no doubt do so as they realize the benefits, so there will be an ongoing gradual changeover.

There are, though, genuine reasons why people have been reluctant to change over to energy efficiency lighting. In the past, the bulbs themselves were significantly more expensive than the equivalent incandescent bulb, and the claims as to how long they would last were greatly exaggerated. Often, these bulbs would malfunction after a relatively short time of use, leaving the user with a feeling of not only disappointment, but also of being lied to and swindled. In recent years longevity has greatly increased, and the manufacturer claims are now more genuine and realistic.

The initial expense of buying energy efficient light bulbs has also greatly diminished, making them a far more practical alternative. They are still more expensive to buy than incandescent bulbs, but with the great improvement in longevity they are no longer more expensive over time. This is without even considering the ongoing savings in fuel which you will make. If you have been burned in the past with poor buys of fluorescent light bulbs, now may be the time to give them another chance, as the odds have moved significantly in their favor.

Another genuine concern which people have voiced in the past is that the bulbs do not often shine at the brightness levels which are quoted. It is often claimed that when you first switch on a fluorescent bulb, it glows only dimly and then takes time to reach full brightness. It is also claimed that even when they do not malfunction these bulbs are prone to develop black markings near the base which seem to diminish the light given out. Again, these problems have now been largely overcome and there are thousands of satisfied users of low energy fluorescent light bulbs.

Energy efficient light bulbs are now cheap enough to allow for experimentation until you find a make and model which you are comfortable with. If you stick to the known brands, you should not go far wrong. Buying a recognized brand from a large discount store will get you the best of both worlds, you will be buying quality but still paying a cheap price for it. Once you have found the right reliable brand, you can simply keep replacing a bulb with the same type on the rare occasions they need replacing. You will continue to save money on every electricity bill with energy efficient light bulbs.
